It seems every year the documentaries at AFFD are the wonderful hidden treasures of the festival. This year was no exception, and I am especially proud that IRON CROWS not only won over its audience (scoring an overall avg 4.52 out of 5, one of the highest scores of the week) but that it ended up winning the hearts and minds of our jury. It was a close race! But if you ever get the chance to view IRON CROWS, in a theater or anywhere else, please do so. It is a powerful, vivid and gorgeously shot piece of work. We send our congratulations and thanks to Bong-Nam Park for this terrific film.

[...] IP MAN 2 brings back all the top names – Donnie Yen is back as IP Man, Wilson Yim is back as director and Sammo Hung is back as action choreographer and he’s even playing a vital character in this sequel. IP Man 2 doesn’t have as much of the political and historical portions as the first film. The sequel instead gets to the heart of IP Man’s reign in Hong Kong, specifically his battle to teach in the tough city. He must battle the local masters, lead by Hung-Ga master Hung Chun-Nam (Sammo Hung). Once IP Man is able to showcase his ass-kicking style the battle really begins. A vicious British Boxer challenges (damn near all of china!!) Hung Chun-Nam and eventually our hero IP MAN!! And of course all the action packed fun is worth it simply for the wonderful ending where Ip Man meets…a VERY young BRUCE LEE!!! Yep IP MAN 3 = IP with Bruce? If I haven’t spoiled the fun, trust me I haven’t – then make sure to catch IP Man 2 TONIGHT – at the Angelika Dallas at 7:15 (get there early!!).
[...] While thoughts of Martin Scorsese’s After Hours or Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise might dance in the background, Au Revoir Taipei is a more conventional “one night, one city” movie. Kai and Susie are in the pre-romantic stage of a relationship, and writer / director Arvin Chen is just as interested in the exploits of Brother Bao, a gangster who longs to retire, and his incompetent nephew, who wants to rip his uncle off to prove his manhood. Au Revoir Taipei proves to be a pleasant trip that captures the lonely mood of post-midnight big city streets. More information, including a trailer, is available at the festival site.
