“And he said, ‘You put ‘em in a boxcar, and you ship ‘em out.’”
Asian-American filmmakers Eric Byler and Annabel Park focus their lens upon the hot-topic issue of U.S. immigration policy. Prince William County, Virginia lawmakers establish a law that requires police to question anyone they suspect might have cause to be an undocumented immigrant. The law creates racial division and fear within the community, and has surprisingly profound and far-reaching social and economic impacts. It also creates such an uproar that anti-immigration and local community resistance groups begin campaigns to raise awareness in support of and to reverse the policy.
An engaging and timely look at how sensitive issues can create grassroots movements on both sides, and the depths of political intricacy involved in making and breaking them, 9500 LIBERTY is a powerful addition to this year’s slate of socially-relevant documentaries.
