At The End Of Daybreak
A film by Ho Yuhang
Southwest Premiere
“Nothing’s going to happen to you.”
With its startling opening scene (foreshadowing some grim events), Ho Yuhang’s AT THE END OF DAYBREAK throws you into a murky sense of uncertainty. Tuck (Chui Tien You) is a 23-year-old who doesn’t do much more than occasionally help his single, alcoholic mother (Wai Ying Hong) tend her small shop. Tuck’s relationship with a 15-year-old brings trouble into their house, and Tuck’s mother does everything she can to defend him. But just as they begin to see a resolution, things turn far worse.
Moody and gorgeously shot, AT THE END OF DAYBREAK takes its lurid melodramatic substance and wraps it in class issues and pitch-perfect examples of youthful ignorance and disregard. And Wai Ying Hong’s performance is one of understated excellence; Tuck’s mother is both pitiable and heartbreaking as she works to protect her son from legitimate and unreasonable attacks.
