Let’s Fall In Love
A film by Wuna Wu
North American Premiere
“… the voice within is shouting to be in love again, to validate my existence…”
Wuna Wu’s sweetly humorous and moving documentary LET’S FALL IN LOVE focuses on a string of Taiwanese couples whose marriages, all set up by matchmaker Helen Chen, are in varying states of flux. Some deal with minor inconveniences they can laugh away, while others have deep emotional disconnects that threaten their lives together. And for a country with a 50% divorce rate – the leader in all of east Asia – Chen’s work within the country’s marriage market plays a very critical role.
The director, however, is having problems of her own, having not yet married. She sees her best friend, Yi-Fan, fall in love and marry in the span of five months, which forces her to ask if it’s too late for herself. The film is comprised of interviews and therapy-like sessions with the couples, while Chen searches for a potential mate for Wu.
By inserting herself into the documentary process, Wu brings an additional layer of immediacy to the subject matter (and if you are married, most of the conversations between husbands and wives will seem immediate enough)and blurs the lines between filmmaker and subject, but only for the best.
