Seven 2 One
A film by Danny Pang
US Premiere
“Come home for soup and just relax. What’s wrong with you?”
SEVEN 2 ONE circles around an incident in a convenience store, where the mundane quickly escalates into a crime scene. Is that checkout girl nervous for a reason? Why is the woman at the magazine counter watching the man at the freezer? And when he approaches the checkout stand, why does a masked man run in and stab him?
With intertwining stories that connect a loan shark, some deceptive lesbians, a cop, his thuggish brother, two convenience store clerks and their lecherous manager…SEVEN 2 ONE is stocked with a mostly young and attractive cast and has been made with particularly slick production values. It rewinds back to each character’s hours prior to the incident, sometimes with the same scene shown from a different perspective, allowing the viewer to realize hidden connections between otherwise distant characters.
Fast and fun, wrapping up with a twisty conclusion, SEVEN 2 ONE comes across as RASHOMON for the cell phone age.
